The sun’s rays can cause damage to the skin, and over time, this can lead to discoloration, pain, and worse, such as melanoma and other forms of skin cancer. It is important to be diligent with sunscreen application in the summer when the sun is out, but what about in the other seasons?

Did you know that the sun’s rays can be harmful all year round? Though there is a lower risk of sunburn in the winter, the UV radiation doesn’t actually change with the seasons. This is why it is important to use sunscreen if you’re going to be outside for a long period of time, such as working outdoors, hiking, or even driving for long distances.

In the winter, the sun’s rays are aided by the falling snow. Because the snow is white, it reflects all of the light that is cast upon it. Thus, the snow acts as a mirror and enhances the effects of the sun’s rays on the skin. This is especially true for those who partake in winter sports; after a day on the slopes, any exposed skin may feel burnt because of the way the sun’s rays bounce off of the snow at close range. Even if you’re not a winter athlete, if you live in a snowy area, it’s important to be mindful of sunburn in the snow!

When we think of sunscreen, we often think of summer, heat, and the beach. But it’s still important to take care of exposed skin in the winter months and protect it from UV radiation. Using sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher is a good way to protect against sunburn. Make sure to take care of your skin no matter what the season!

From a young age, most us have been told to make sure to wear sunscreen in the summer to protect against sunburn and harmful UV radiation.
